This is a fireplace with all or partial masonry components. The firebox can be either firebrick or steel. The damper control is usually above the fireplace opening either inside the firebox or on the face. The exterior chimney is almost always brick, block, or stone. This includes an internal video evaluation (IVE) and level 1 inspection.
This is a fireplace that is designed to be framed in a wooden chase. The firebox, whether metal or refractory panels, is part of an insulated steel system. The vertical stack has a stainless steel interior flue and galvanized outer sections. This type of fireplace is installed in both masonry and sided chimney chases. All (FB) fireplaces should be listed to the UL 127 standard. This type of system is often mistakenly refered to as a zero clearance fireplace. This includes an internal video evaluation (IVE) and level 1 inspection.
A fireplace insert is a field installed wood stove designed to be put into an existing fireplace. A properly installed insert, for a masonry fireplace, should have a UL 1777 insulated chimney liner running from the insert to the top of the chimney. Inserts installed into a factory built fireplace must be tested and listed for the model of fireplace they are to be installed in. Most EPA certified modern inserts require disassembly of some of the firebox components for proper sweeping. Just running a brush from the top down can make things worse. Inserts are heavy creosote producers and require annual service. This includes an internal video evaluation (IVE) if the installation allows.
We use the Chim-Scan closed circuit monitoring and recording system. This allows us to get up close and personal with the interior components of your masonry fireplace and/or chimney.
A factory built fireplace can generaly be inspecte without the use of our camera system.
